Israel-Hamas: Donkey tour, drone footage shows extent of destruction in Gaza’s Khan Younis

Seven weeks of consistent military bombardment from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has reduced northern Gaza to rubble — as shown in footage captured by locals this week.

A six-day truce between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants — which is set to expire Thursday morning — has allowed outsiders a closer look at the destruction.

Particularly in the city Khan Younis, the rubble-littered streets have forced those going far distances to travel via donkey-drawn carts.

“Unfortunately, our houses were destroyed, struck by airstrikes. The situation is unfortunate. Life is so hard,” displaced Gazan Mohammed al-Najar said on Tuesday.

After being forced to evacuate to schools in Khan Younis for safety, al-Najar said it took between three and four hours to arrive from the small town of Khuza’a — a journey that would, typically, take less than 20 minutes by car.

Israel’s siege of Gaza came after Palestinian Hamas militants killed approximately 1,200 Israeli’s on Oct. 7, during Shabbat — a Jewish rest day. The IDF’s retaliatory attack has resulted in the death of more than 15,000 Palestinians — 40 per cent of which were children.
