MSU student protesters set up solidarity encampment to call for ceasefire in Gaza and divestment

Protestors at Michigan State University today formed an encampment on campus, joining a national movement of college students calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and asking their schools to pull back investments related to Israel.

MSU is in the middle of exam week and graduation is fast approaching, but about 50 students set up tents early this morning in People’s Park on campus. They're demanding an end to Israel’s military action in Gaza, and calling on the MSU Board of Trustees to divest its holdings in Israeli bonds and weapons manufacturing companies.

One of those students identified herself as Jeneen. She said she’s Palestinian and that the school is being complicit in the violence.

Campus police are on-scene and have told the protestors to remove the tents that they say violate school policy. Demonstrators said they aren’t going anywhere until they see action from the administration.

Speaking near the encampment, university spokesperson Emily Guerrant said that officials have been clear about their opposition to divestment.

Guerrant added the protestors can apply for a permit to have the tents on campus. Officials say they are continuing to have peaceful dialogue with the protestors, and no arrests have been made so far.
