Railway Crossing Malfunctions In Victoria, Australia
Here's something a little different! So, since I started filming level crossings (in Victoria, Australia), on some occasions I've managed to film the crossings malfunctioning. Some of these I've uploaded with level crossing videos, and others I've filmed AFTER I've already uploaded a video of them, so I've got some new stuff here. It's a bit more spectacular on paper, but I find these things quite amusing. Hope you enjoy!
I'm gonna try and give explanations for the malfunctions, but I don't really have one for the first three crossings, or the fifth one
Ewings Rd, Avenel, I DO have an explanation. So, this crossing was programmed rather strangely. It was most likely operated by a grade crossing predictor, rather than the usual track circuits, which senses how fast a train is moving. If a train is going slower, it has to get closer to the crossing before the signals activate. Once the signals have activated, if a train stops when approaching the crossing then the signals can 'time out' and will be switched off until the train starts moving again (thanks McK&H Aust for that info). For trains that came from Albury and stopped at Avenel, the crossing activated when the train would pull into the station, and then would 'time out' once the train stopped to let on and off passengers. Once the train restarted moving, the crossing would reactivate.
Aviation Rd, Laverton, I also have a 'sort of' explanation. There was a freight train on the third track, which had obviously passed through the crossing previously. For some reason, it stopped and reversed down the line for a few hundred metres, which may have caused the crossing to act in the way it did.
The malfunctions on the pedestrian boom gates could simply be caused by a fault within the mechanisms themselves
