When to go to the ER vs doctor's office
Your kiddo is sick, or an injury happens, and you're wondering where's the best place to take them?!🚗 🏥
Between the Emergency Room, Urgent Care, and your doctor's office, the decision can feel tough to make. It's often most convenient to see your child's clinician as they know your child best, but sometimes an intervention is needed that is not available in doctor's offices.
In general, you should see your child's clinician for:
✅Routine check-ups
✅Vaccinations
✅Common minor illnesses (think, sore throat, ear pain, cold symptoms, etc)
✅Developmental or growth concerns
✅Non-urgent health issues
Most of the time, if your child's symptoms are mild enough that you’re comfortable waiting a day for their appointment, a visit with the clinician is appropriate.
Urgent care is helpful for minor injuries, such as those concerning for a sprain or minor fracture, or minor cuts or burns, or minor illnesses when your clinician’s office is full or closed.
Finally, the Emergency Room (ER) is the place to go when your child faces a life-threatening concern, as they are equipped to handle critical conditions 24/7 and have specialized clinicians on stand-by to evaluate certain cases.
