Krakoa vs. Knull: Final Battle | SWORD #4 Review! | Krakin Krakoa #166

SWORD #4 concludes the King in Black takeover of Krakoa, with a Symbiote Cable threating all life on the mutant nation, and Manifold, Wiz-Kid, Frenzy, and the SWORD team the only option to stop him. It’s the least impressive issue in my favorite new X-book of 2021, but nonetheless provides plenty to chew on:

Knull Cable is creating Anti-Krakoa, using Cable’s technology and mutant abilities to hold all of Krakoa at bay via symbiote prisons, with really only Manifold left to defend the nation for much of the issue.

While I defended SWORD #2 and #3 as great examples of Al Ewing’s uncanny ability to master comic book tie-ins, and still progress his own storyline, issue #4 feels like the most like an issue plagued by event fatigue, as King in Black continues its months long march towards an issue #5 conclusion next month. Through the three issue jaunt into King in Black, I’ve remained most interested in how SWORD manages a hostile alien takeover, rather than actually showing down with Knull himself (I’ve got plenty of that as is through the main Venom-centric event and the gazillion other tie-ins). I’m happy to be moving on into Ewing, Schiti, Gracia and Maher’s vision for this book moving forward! Again, SWORD has been VERY good as tie-ins, but it’s going to get better.
