Goose vs Glamour - Fabio’s 70-mph Roller-Coaster Bloodbath
On March 30, 1999, Italian model Fabio Lanzoni was invited to be the celebrity guest on the inaugural run of Apollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens Williamsburg — front row, surrounded by women in white gowns, with the full media watching. At roughly 70 mph on the first drop, a goose flew into the path of the coaster, struck the front of the car, broke its neck, and the carcass flipped up and hit Fabio square on the bridge of his nose.
The women next to him were spattered with blood. He was taken by limo to the hospital for three stitches. The goose did not survive.
The photo of a bloodied Fabio sitting stoically in the coaster car became one of the most iconic images of the decade.
Years later, Fabio tried to rewrite the story, claiming in a 2018 interview that the goose actually hit a video camera mounted on the ride, and a piece of shrapnel from the camera cut him — not the bird. He accused Busch Gardens of covering it up and even called it "the beginning of fake news." The problem? Reporters were physically present, the goose carcass was recovered the next day, and park officials confirmed what happened at the time.
His alternate version surfaced nearly 20 years later with zero supporting evidence.
Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction — a goose took out the most famous romance novel cover model in the world at 70 mph on opening day, and he tried to blame a camera.
