God performs miraculous signs through prophets Elijah and Elisha to warn the kings of Israel and Judah of impending doom, but the kings rebel and do not repent from their idolatrous worship. The kingdom of Israel is divided with the Northern Kingdom of Israel conquered by Assyria and the Southern Kingdom of Judah conquered by Babylon.

Despite the wickedness of the majority of kings and the disobedience of the people, God remembered His promise to David (2 Samuel 7:10-13), and He did not bring David’s family to an end:

“Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the LORD was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever.” -2 Kings 8:19
