Helter Skelter: The Madness of Charles Manson

In August 1969, followers of Charles Manson, a cult leader who believed in an impending race war he called “Helter Skelter,” committed a series of brutal murders in Los Angeles. On August 8–9, Manson’s followers murdered actress Sharon Tate (who was pregnant) and four others at her homee. The following night, they killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, a wealthy couple. The murders were random, violent, and included messages written in the victims’ blood.

Manson did not personally kill the victims but directed and manipulated his followers to do so. He and several members of his cult were arrested and convicted in 1971. Manson was sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 2017. The case shocked the nation and became one of the most infamous examples of cult-related violence in U.S. history.
