Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of IWC. Today I'll be your guide to the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII Edition Le Petit Prince, Reference 3270-04. 2016 is the year of the Pilot's Watch at IWC and for the revision of the model line, IWC has launched not just a new Mark Edition Le Petit Prince, but a Mark XVIII successor to the XVII. It features a number of refinements that are specific to the Mark as well as several refinements that are unique to the Petit Prince Edition.
First and foremost, versus the Mark XVII, the Mark XVIII has a more versatile and traditionally-inspired 40mm versus the former 41mm case. Moreover, a number of dial elements featured on the Petit Prince are shared with the new Mark XVIII, including a simplified date window at 3, no longer the triple date. Just a single beautiful stepped aperture. The re-edition of the Arabic numeral 6 at 6 and 9 and 9, and the dropping of the triangular index at 12, out from the minute track down to beneath the hour index at its station.
The watch features a handsome alternately brushed and satin finished stainless steel case. The case featuring a narrowing and tapering polished bevel along its lug flanks as well as a polish along the band of the bezel, but principally the aesthetic is subdued and satin.
Working our way from the outside in, the watch features a versatile and easily adjusted alternately polished and satin finished IWC blazon pin buckle for a traditional aesthetic and easy on-the-fly adjustability. The watch features a custom-made Santoni leather strap from Italy featuring the company's signature signal orange on the underside and a rich, dark black calfskin aviation specific and traditional to the aviation field with a contrasting stitch on the top.
The watch features a gorgeous dark blue sunburst, this unique to the Petit Prince Edition. It contrasts beautifully with the white demarkations of hours and minutes on the dial. The watch features large polished broadsword-style hands at center for hours and minutes, such that the timepiece is immensely legible in direct light, low light or no light conditions and allonset style seconds extends entirely over the [inaudible 00:02:24] for easy tracking of this metric.
The watch features on its case back the namesake Petit Prince. The Petit Prince, the most beloved character created by noted humanist, aeromail pioneer, French resistance fighter and author, Antoine de Saint Exupery, is pictured with his regal ensemble of boots, sword and cloak. Also noted addition to Le Petit Prince as well as the six-bar water resistance. Beneath this engraved case back the movement is protected by six ATM water resistance or 60 meters. Now this allows the watch per IWC to be used swimming, shallow diving and snorkeling.
It's also important to note that, in addition to robust water resistance, IWC equips the Mark XVIII Edition Le Petit Prince with unique aviation-specific refinements, including blowout protection such that the crystal, the crow seals and the case back are secured against blowout in the event that a aviation cockpit or cabin explosively decompresses in flight.
Moreover, a soft iron inter-cage envelops the movement entirely providing resistance to magnetic flux and strong magnetic fields as can be experienced in high-tech cockpit environments. Inside that magnetic cage is an IWC caliber 30110 42-hour bi-directional automatic winding caliber. It's exceptionally slim and features a number of refinements that ease timesetting and date setting of the watch.
In the outermost position the balance is stopped, the second hand halts, the watch is what is known as hacked. There's an intermediate position between winding and hacking that allows the date to be rapidly corrected should the watch run down or encounter one of the five irregular length months.
