Backpacking Nicaragua - USA to Managua to Granada

We left the USA headed toward Nicaragua in search of adventure. We really didn't have any plans, we just knew we would be there for 3 week and had a rough estimate of places we wanted to see. Everything else was up in the air. We flew into Managua late one evening. We caught an airport shuttle bus and stayed at a hotel that was right down the road from the airport for the first night.
Waking up the next morning, we were greeted by a beautiful sunny day which would make for a wonderful day traveling to Granada.
We were looking to save a little money as well as get a bit of a cultural experience so rather than taking a taxi to Granada, we took the bus system.
We caught a taxi from our hotel to the UCA (pronounced Ooh-ka), the express bus terminal and found the bus headed to Granada.
We had nowhere to stay that night, so we spent a bit of time exploring the city and trying to find a place to drop our backpacks. There are tons of hostels in granada on all of the side streets near Parque Central.
Note: IMO the best spot to start a hostel search is to head toward the big yellow cathedral like you see at the end of the video, and travel the road direct to the north (Left, if you are looking at the building from Parque Central). Walk that path/road like you are headed to the lake and keep your eyes open for hostels. Lots of options there. This is also the street with the nightlife and "Granada's Best Fish Taco's", and yeah...they were pretty good...
After finding a spot to drop your stuff, head west to see Lake Nicaragua. I wouldn't get too excited about swimming and playing on the beaches as it is pretty dirty. When we were there, there was lots of trash on the beach and murky water (it is still a lake, remember) with nobody playing in the water. As always, make the trip down and judge for yourself; because places WILL change (and if you DO check it out, and it's cleaned up, drop a comment below and I'd love to update). It's definitely worth seeing either way; it's the largest lake in central america and 19th largest in the world.
Although there is some seriously beautiful Spanish architecture there, Granada was still too 'city' like for our tastes so we decided to move on after a nights rest.
