✍🏻Iranian universities have reopened after a month-long shutdown, but instead of normal classes, thousands of students returned to campuses with protests. Major institutions in Tehran including University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University, and Shahid Beheshti University witnessed large demonstrations for the second consecutive day. Security forces and pro-government student groups linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were deployed heavily around campuses. Clashes broke out between anti-establishment students and pro-state groups, while videos circulating online showed students chanting powerful slogans demanding freedom and justice. Similar scenes were reported from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, a region that had already become a hotspot during January’s deadly protests.

Opposing narratives are now shaping the national conversation. State media showed pro-government students burning US and Israeli flags and chanting in support of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while independent footage online captured students shouting slogans like “Woman, life, freedom” and “Death to the dictator.” Some protesters even raised Iran’s pre-1979 flag to symbolically support Reza Pahlavi. Authorities claim that thousands of people arrested during the protests were linked to foreign-backed unrest, while families of victims continue mourning publicly despite strict restrictions. The gap between official reports and independent videos highlights how deeply divided Iranian society has become.

The real impact of these protests goes beyond universities. Human rights groups say the death toll may be far higher than what the government admits. The Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported over 7,000 confirmed deaths and is reviewing thousands more cases. UN experts, including Mai Sato, estimate the number could exceed 20,000, while former US President Donald Trump claimed it could be as high as 32,000. Iran has rejected international investigations and insists that violence was caused by “terrorists and rioters.” What is clear is that student protests have once again become the voice of national resistance, and their return to campuses signals that the crisis is far from over.
