The Most Beautiful Place in the World | Drakensberg
Greetings from sunny South Africa! This week we show you a snippet of the most beautiful place in the world | Drakensberg.
The Drakensberg South Africa is one of the most beautiful places to go hiking in the world. People travel from all around the world to hike in this area because of its beautiful views and dramatic geographic features.
We went on a breath-taking adventure into the Drakensberg Mountains. An overnight hike into the mountains was just what the doctor ordered! We spent two nights in the mountains taking in all the beautiful views and the stunning landscapes.
We had the privilege of going into the mountains with a seasoned hiking guide named Drew, who also happens to be Sarah’s cousin. As mentioned in our video, Drew has some epic hiking expeditions in store, to follow along on his hiking adventures check out his instagram page @wildestdreamsza (https://www.instagram.com/wildest_dreams_za/).
Our adventure started in Mnweni (267 km outside of Durban) where we trekked up into an unnamed valley (we like to call it Saddle Valley) near the base of ‘The Saddle’ in central Drakensberg. We signed the hiking register and purchased our hiking permits at the Mnweni Cultural and Hiking Centre (https://www.drakensbergexperience.com/community-projects/item/235-mnweni-cultural-and-hiking-centre) R60.00 per person per night.
Being in the mountains is an incredible experience; this was made even more exhilarating for us by hiking in an area not often explored by others. Drew has a wealth of knowledge about the mountains, so it was amazing to learn from him every step of the way.
The mountains treated us to some relatively warm weather considering we are in the middle of winter.
This was our first overnight hike into the mountains and also our first time trying to make a video whilst hiking. It was challenging experience, but we loved every moment. We can’t wait for the next hiking trip! We hope you enjoy this snippet of our stunning Drakensberg.
Tips for visiting the region:
◾An off-road vehicle is advisable (a decent part of the journey is spent on gravel roads with some gnarly potholes and a couple of river crossings thrown into the mix).
◾Take cash along with you or be sure to have enough phone signal for an EFT (the Mnweni Cultural and Hiking Centre does not accept cards)
◾Mnweni is the only part of the Drakensberg that does not form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Mnweni is cultural land that has been given to the Zulus and therefore is not government run or funded. When hiking, you are in a wilderness area and there are no facilities or marked trails – you have to be able to navigate with a map and be completely self-sufficient.
