Summer in South Africa | The Drakensberg

Welcome to the first episode of five where we explore some of the splendours that South Africa has to offer.

In this episode we visit the Drakensberg, which literally translates to Dragon Mountains. This incredibly beautiful ridge of mountains runs parallel to the South African east coast and reaches a height of almost 3500m above sea level.

The escarpment itself is an awesome cliff face up to 1000m high, jutting out from the rolling foot hills of Kwa Zulu Natal.

Our first camp is Mahai, Royal Natal National Park. Famous for it spectacular hikes, incredible scenery and also home to the worlds second highest waterfall - Tugela Falls which plunges 950m from its source in Lesotho. We hike to tugela gorge, the base of the waterfall and enjoy a chilly dip in the clear blue waters.

Royal Natal National Park is run by Ezemvelo KZN formally known as the Natal Parks Board, there are two accommodation options in the park, namely Mahai which is a very popular campsite alongside the Mahai river and Thendele, numerous self catering chalets set on top a ridge overlooking the Amphitheatre.

Bookings can be made directly with EKZN on their website:

We will be releasing an episode every week of our trip which also includes Kosi Bay, in the sub tropical north of Kwa-Zulu Natal and a week in Kruger National Park.

Cheers
