Exploring KwaZulu Natal - Episode 2: Somkhanda

Exploring KZN is an ongoing series capturing the beauty of our adventures, exploring the breath taking and diverse province of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.

Join our family of four as we traverse off-road trails to get to lesser seen hidden gems, wild camp in Safari bucket list Big 5 reserves, and stay in the high end luxury destinations of our province.

This is the second episode in our ongoing series of exploring the amazing province of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. This time, we visit Somkhanda Game Reserve just outside of the game rich area of Mkhuze in Zululand.

The Reserve boasts accommodation in tented self catering units, chalets and our ultimate - wild, unfenced campsites.

Somkhanda is a Big 5 reserve, home to many species of game including lion, wild dog, leopard, brown and spotted hyena, elephant, black and white rhino and many more.

The wild camping experience is reminiscent of Botswana and Somkhanda is one of the only reserves in South Africa to offer this. It is offered in two camps - Scotia Camp, a non-electrified, unfenced camp with the luxury of flushing toilets and hot water open air showers, and, Haak en Steek, a completely wild camp with no amenities.

Somkhanda Game Reserve is run by Wild Connection and can be booked through their website:
