Malham Cove, Gordale Scar & Janet's Foss | Yorkshire Dales

In this guide we show you everything you need to know about completing Malham Cove circular walk, which is one of the most popular walks in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk is 4.5 miles long and relatively easy, so likely suitable for families and mature walkers.

The walk takes you to three famous locations within the Yorkshire Dales: Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss.

Malham Cove Circular Walk instructions:

To reach Malham Cove, walk straight up Cove Road until you see the National Trust sign for Malham Tarn Estate on your right and head through the gate. Here you’ll experience your first views of the majestic Malham Cove soaring up ahead.

Malham Cove is a large curved limestone formation, which you can view from below before climbing up Jacob's ladder to the top, where you will be rewarded with incredible views over the Yorkshire Dales. If you're a Harry Potter fan you may also recognise Malham Cove from it's appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Gordale Scar is next one the route. From the top of Malham Cove, walk down Sheriff Hill to Gordale bridge. Turn left, and follow the path along Gordale Beck until you reach Gordale Scar.This spectacular gorge is thought to have been formed by meltwater from glaciers cutting down through faults in the rock; throughout the following ice ages this was carved deeper and deeper over thousands of years, eventually creating the deep gorge we can walk through today.

The final stop on your route is Janet's Foss. Go back on yourself to Gordale Bridge, and keep following the road straight down until you see the sign for Janet's Foss on your left. Janet's Foss is a small waterfall which carries Gordale Beck over the limestone edge and into a deep pool below. This pool used to be used for a natural form of sheep dipping, but now you can use it to go for a swim.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through the beautiful woods before returning to Malham. Well done on completing one of the most popular walks in the Yorkshire Dales.
