GOP Revolts Over Trump’s Jan. 6 Slush Fund. #trending
According to Reuters and other outlets, Senate Republicans delayed key immigration funding votes after backlash exploded inside the GOP conference over the fund and additional controversial spending proposals. Republican senators reportedly raised concerns about transparency, oversight, and the possibility that January 6 rioters could benefit from taxpayer money.
One of the most notable voices speaking out is Senator Bill Cassidy, who has long had tensions with Trump after voting to convict him following the January 6 Capitol attack. Cassidy recently lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger but has continued criticizing Trump-backed spending proposals and signaling opposition to controversial funding requests.
The Daily Beast reported that critics inside and outside Congress are calling the fund unprecedented political corruption, especially after Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reportedly refused to rule out payments going to convicted January 6 participants. Capitol Police officers who defended the Capitol have now filed lawsuits seeking to block the fund entirely.
The controversy is exposing deeper fractures inside the Republican Party as some senators worry Trump’s loyalty demands and spending battles are becoming political liabilities ahead of the midterm elections. While Trump allies defend the fund as compensation for political targeting, opponents argue it crosses ethical and constitutional lines.
👇 What do YOU think?
Should taxpayer money ever go toward compensating January 6 defendants and Trump allies? Or is this government overreach in the other direction?
