Synopsis
No Left Turn – Is Social Democracy Over? asks a fundamental question at the heart of European politics: has social democracy reached the end of its historical mission?
At a time of prolonged economic crisis, rising inequality, and social insecurity, one might expect social democratic parties to be entering a new golden age. Surveys show that 58 percent of Europeans identify as centre-left or left-wing. Yet paradoxically, social democracy across Europe is in decline.
The documentary revisits the core values of social democracy — freedom, equality, and solidarity — and investigates whether these principles still hold political power in today’s globalized, market-driven societies. Through interviews with politicians, economists, and political thinkers, the film examines why traditional centre-left parties struggle to translate widespread public support into electoral success.
Finally, the documentary explores the structural challenges facing social democracy: the legacy of neoliberal reforms, the erosion of welfare states, voter alienation, and competition from populist movements on both ends of the political spectrum. Rather than offering simple solutions, No Left Turn presents social democracy as a political project at a crossroads — forced either to fundamentally reinvent itself or risk long-term irrelevance.
