A lot of people ask about Ellevest vs. Betterment, or Ellevest vs. Wealthfront, but I’m specifically going to focus on an Ellevest review in this video to try and be a bit more specific with what they offer for financial products and investment options.
I have no affiliation with Ellevest. I am NOT being paid for this video. Just my own personal thoughts.
Ellevest is a robo advisor that uses algorithms to easily personalize an investment portfolio just for you. You do not need to be an expert investor at all. If you are just a beginner investor, Ellevest will help you with everything and allow you to get started with investing.
One of the biggest differentiators about Ellevest. It is made by women, for women. From their website, “The investing industry was built by men, for men — which means its supposedly “gender-neutral” tools were failing women.” Let’s break down those barriers!
The company is women led and have a reputable founder/CEO, is trustworthy, and mission driven. My initial thoughts - Ellevest has a lot of positives about it and in general I see nothing wrong with using it (We’ll talk about the fees in the video though because this is one thing you should understand). I am not a financial advisor, but my video is meant as an open conversation with different things to consider based on your situation.
Ellevest offers products that are relatively similar to the other roboadvisor companies out there (Betterment and Wealthfront).
Investing: They will create a personalized portfolio for you based on your risk tolerance and other factors. They have an impact portfolio that allows you to invest in socially conscious and ethically conscious businesses.
Learning: They have online resources to help you learn more about personal finance and investing.
Banking: Open up a checking or savings account. They have ATM fee reimbursements. One thing to note: I do not think their savings account offers an interest rate.
Coaching: Get discounts on one-on-one sessions with a personal financial advisor.
Retirement: Open retirement accounts to save for the future with Ellevest.
Multi-goal investing: Have different accounts based on different goals you might have.
There are three pricing packages ranging from $1/month to $9/month. I go through detail in the video on how to consider which package might be best for you. But in general, I think the first package, Essential @ $1/month, will likely be suitable for a lot of people if you do not need retirement accounts. My personal opinion is that you should aim for starting with about $1000 invested in Ellevest so that the monthly fee isn’t too large a %.
How does the investment portfolio get chosen: “The personalized investment plan we design for you will include low-cost ETFs and/or mutual funds that include stocks, bonds, and alternatives — all carefully chosen to give you the best chance to meet your goals.” (Ellevest Website)
Let me know if you have any other questions or comments! Thanks for watching!
