Leo The Cute Baby Capuchin Monkey
Leo is a baby Capuchin monkey at La Senda Verde animal sanctuary in Coroico, Bolivia (www.sendaverde.com). He was sitting on my lap playing when the older and meaner Camilo turned up to harass him so Leo slipped down my shirt to hide.
EDIT: A couple of people have helpfully suggested that I should have yelled at or hit the older Capuchin to discipline him. Erm... no. This is an animal sanctuary for creatures illegally removed to or bred in captivity who have generally then been abandoned by their owners. In many cases they have been beaten and/or mistreated by their owners. This is precisely why some of these animals have developed behavioural problems. In any case, it's never acceptable to hit an animal in an effort to change its behaviour.
Another note - in Bolivia it is illegal to release an animal back into the wild after it's been kept in a domestic environment as it may have picked up a virus or other illness that could be passed on to a wild population, with devastating consequences.
For many animals that have spent a long time in captivity, they have likely failed to develop or lost the skills required to survive in the wild, or they belong to a social species which does not accept 'new arrivals'. Unfortunately often the only options available for wild animals abandoned by their domestic owners are euthanasia or to live out their life in one of these sanctuaries.
