13 Interesting Capuchin Monkey Facts
The capuchin monkey gets its name from a group of friars (male members) from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. These members wore brown robes with large hoods covering their heads, and when the explorers in the 15th century found small monkeys which looked like these male members, they named them capuchin monkeys. This was how this monkey got its rather unusual name.
Destruction of the natural habitat is a problem for the Capuchin Monkey. However, it is believed that they aren’t in critical danger at this point in time. They are more isolated than other Monkeys so they seem to be doing well in that location. There isn’t information on the exact number of them that are in the wild today
There are 9 different species of capuchin monkeys that inhabit tropical rainforests, dry forests and mangroves. Capuchin monkeys can withstand habitat destruction better than other primate species. Sadly, number of capuchin monkeys decreased drastically as a result of over-hunting (local people consume meat of capuchin monkeys), pet trade and scientific research. So far, capuchin monkeys are not listed as endangered species.
