"Hope Keeps You Going" – The Story of Marta Weiss
Marta Weiss was born on October 8, 1934 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. She was one of nine children. In 1942, Marta's father decided that it was no longer safe for the children to remain in Bratislava and decided to sent them away to different families. Marta was sent to Sarvar, Hungary. With the Nazi occupation of Hungary, her parents paid someone to bring her back to Bratislava. Upon her return to Bratislava, Marta's father sent her and her sister Eva to live in Nitra, Slovakia under false identities. However, they were discovered, deported to Sered, a transit camp, and subsequently deported to Auschwitz on November 3, 1944. Marta was just ten years old when she arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Eva and Marta were sent to Dr. Mengele's experimental block, and were experimented on with injections. They were liberated in Auschwitz, and were reunited with their family in June, 1945. Only at the end of the war did the family find out that Marta's younger sister, Yehudit, was murdered in Auschwitz. The rest of her siblings and her parents survived the Holocaust. In 1948 Marta's family left Slovakia and moved to Australia.
She married Harold Wise in December 1957. They have three daughters and 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. They moved to Israel with their daughters in 1997 and now live in Jerusalem. Marta meets with youth from all over the world and tells them what happened to her during the Holocaust.
