Assessment and motivation – strategies for the ELT classroom

Well-managed assessment in an English language program can make a huge difference to learner motivation. This session looks at how assessment can be an effective part of a teacher’s motivational toolkit. Craig Thaine investigates ways teachers can manage challenges associated with assessment, and looks at how Learning Oriented Assessment can provide valuable learning opportunities. He also focuses on ways to provide constructive post-assessment feedback.

Craig Thaine has worked in ELT for 40 years as a teacher/teacher trainer in England, Italy, Egypt, Sweden and his native New Zealand. He has run seminars and workshops for teachers in Indonesia, Mexico, Spain, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Craig is author of Real Listening and Speaking Level 2(2008), Teacher Training Essentials (2010), and Off the Page (2020). He is also co-author of Cambridge Academic English (2012) and Empower (2015, 2021), a general English adult course.
