Southern Comfort: Elvis Back Up Singer Reunion, September 6, 2014
Finally! After nearly forty years since they were all in the same room together, the members of "Southern Comfort" assembled together for a special reunion on September 6, 2014...in my cousin's carport and living room, lol.
My apologies if the speed of the text at the beginning is too fast. If you are unable to pause it to read it for whatever reason, I am placing the text here in the description...
"I can't ever remember not being familiar with the music of Elvis Presley. While the young Elvis was "cool" and all, it is his post-68' comeback special career that I enjoy the most. Songs like, "Suspicious Minds", " Moody Blue", "Always On My Mind", "I've Lost You", "Only The Strong Survive", "Inherit The Wind", "The Yellow Rose Of Texas", and "In The Ghetto" were among my many favorites.
As a young, misunderstood, "Elvis-obessed" teenager - one who went so far as to sport his own "pomp" for many years - I never dreamed that I would one day be a part of the special reunion that recently took place on September 6, 2014.
A group of girls who called themselves "Southern Comfort", was Elvis' studio backing group from 1969-1974. They are not to be confused with Elvis' live concert back up group that consisted of Kathy Westmoreland, and "The Sweet Inspirations". However, "Southern Comfort" did do some collaborative work with Kathy Westmoreland at Stax Records in 1973.
"Southern Comfort" consisted of group founder and leader: Jeanie Green, along with Mary and Ginger Holladay (sisters), Donna Jean Thatcher Godchaux McKay, and Susan Colemman Pilkington.
The group broke and when their separate ways somewhere around 1974. The Hollday sisters stayed on and contiuned to record with Elvis up until his death in 1977. Donna went on to marry Keith Godchaux in 1970 of band, "The Grateful Dead", and became a member.
Recently, after near forty years of separation, the group reassembled in Albertville, Alabama for time of photos and interviews for an upcoming book.
The energy in the room was electrifying, and the experience of it all was certainly surreal. After all those years of hearing and loving all those great Elvis classics, and suddenly, the artists involved with the original recording are belting it out before your eyes right on your carport!"
