How to Create Custom Blocks (Functions) in MIT Scratch
In this Scratch coding tutorial, I will show you how to create Custom Blocks in Scratch which is the Scratch version of creating a Function. And functions are a fundamental part of coding and a crucial element in following the DRY principle (Don't Repeat Yourself) so if you want to become a better programmer and figure out how to use Custom Block/Functions in MIT Scratch to code more efficiently then this video is for you.
We'll cover it all from the basics of making a block/function, to passing in parameters, to parameter types, to adding labels, and understanding the local scope of variables within blocks/functions.
It's a bit of a long tutorial so here are some quick links for easy jumping around:
00:00 Intro
00:53 The DRY Principle
01:26 What is a Custom Block?
02:15 Custom Block Examples
08:19 Creating the Block via the My Block Tab
14:00 Nesting Custom Blocks
16:30 Think of Custom Blocks (Functions) as Reusable Building Blocks
18:00 Editing/Updating a Custom Block
18:15 Adding Parameters (Inputs) to your Custom Blocks
20:22 Adding Multiple Parameters to a Custom Block
21:36 Adding Labels to Your Custom Blocks
23:36 The Boolean Parameter
27:32 Understand Local Variable Scope Within a Block/Function
