Why Andrew Johnson Pardoned Lincoln's Attempted Assassin

John Wilkes Booth was the man who actually killed Abraham Lincoln, but he was far from the only former Confederate who had it out for the president who led the Union to victory in the Civil War. One such man was Samuel Arnold, who was convicted of conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln.

There's evidence Arnold was at the very least part of a plot to kidnap and ransom Lincoln, but his involvement in the actual assassination is pretty unclear. For one thing, he was in Virginia, not Washington, at the time Booth shot Lincoln. Yet he was convicted nonetheless and sentenced to life in prison. Then Lincoln's successor as president pardoned him. To what end? Here's why Andrew Johnson pardoned Lincoln's attempted assassin.
