Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in plants (and essential oils) that can have anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, neuroprotective and cognitive enhancing effects.
When ingested orally (as in edibles or prescription medications), terpenes exert their influence in the digestive tract and throughout the immune system. --- NOTE: DO NOT INGEST Essential Oils. That can be toxic.
The 120 terpenes found in cannabis may influence the overall effects by either helping cannabinoids to penetrate the blood– brain barrier more easily, by altering liver metabolism of the cannabinoids or by contributing their own therapeutic properties. (Entourage effect)
