Wheel Throwing Series: Trimming Plates on The Potter's Wheel - Showing an Undercut for Hanging!

The video is focused on trimming 2 different types of plate forms which I threw in the previous video found here:

The first plate I trim is the flattened one (where I made it with the large dowel). Remember that the thickness of the walls and the floor of the plate forms should always be even. If you have thicker and thinner areas, it will potentially dry unevenly, resulting in cracking. Uneven drying will cause uneven SHRINKING of the clay- and that’s where your cracks often arise. I used a small ribbon tool to create an angle on the inside of the foot, giving it space to hang on a hook on a wall after firing.

The second plate is the scooped plate, and I also put the angled foot on that one suitable for hanging on a wall.

Both plates are from 4 lbs of clay. I am using Laguna B mix cone 6 without grog.

My new series will offer new videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!
