He scratches until he bleeds, and then he doesn't stop. Saiko is one of the most medically complex cats we have ever rescued, and after months of fighting alongside him, we still don't have answers. What we do know is this: his enlarged spleen, his crashing blood counts, and his relentless suffering demand a CT scan that we simply cannot afford right now. We need $1,500 to keep Saiko's fight alive, and we need it now.

Almost a year ago, we found Saiko dumped alongside five other cats from a pet shop. They had been cruelly discarded like inventory that had expired. Every single one of them was sick. Between respiratory infections, viruses, malnutrition, and more, it took us months and thousands of dollars to bring that group back from the edge. Most of them recovered, except for Saiko.

Cases like his that are chronic, systemic, and unrelenting often point to something that began long before rescue ever reached him. Saiko itches his body compulsively and violently. He tears at his own skin until he bleeds, and sometimes, he does not stop even then. We tried every treatment available, including daily injections, and he remained unresponsive to all of them. His body is at war with itself, and we don't yet know why.
However, we do have some data to share. His ultrasound revealed an enlarged spleen and liver, which is alarming to doctors, but could point to something more specific that we can tackle. His blood tests also confirmed IMHA: Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, a condition in which his own immune system attacks and destroys his red blood cells. Without careful management, IMHA can be fatal. But IMHA may only be part of the picture. The underlying cause, whether cancer, autoimmune disease, or something idiopathic entirely, remains unconfirmed. Without a CT scan, we are treating symptoms while the underlying cause remains hidden. That is not good enough for Saiko.

We refused to let Saiko decline in a shelter or foster environment without specialized support. We made the decision to move him into medical boarding with our veterinarian, someone who made the selfless choice to take Saiko in and give him one-on-one, around-the-clock care. Since then, Saiko has received daily medication, IV fluids when needed, a specialized diet, and weekly blood tests to monitor his fragile condition. That decision saved his life.

The next critical step is a CT scan, which will be sent to a specialist in France who focuses exactly on cases like his. We will receive a full internal report and finally, real answers. We are a small rescue, and Saiko has already cost us more than any single case in our history, and we have carried that willingly because this is exactly why we do this work. But our resources are gone. The CT scan, his ongoing medical boarding at $200 per month, his medication, his special food, and his blood tests add up to $1,500, and we do not have it.
