Hohner 270 Super customization #13 How Get Nails Out? Kettlewell chromatic harmonica

The 13th video in the series on customizing a vintage Hohner Super 270, this video focuses on possible approaches to removing the nails holding the reedplates to the wooden comb.
Hmmmm.

While the Hohner 270 Super is a great harp, I found it was incorrectly tuned, with A440 instead of the current standard of A443.

Later, we will see the rare stoning of the shouldered blank on top of the slide to airtighten the harp further.

The harp has a strong reputation for a gentle tone and retro feel in play, but the harp also is perceived as having drawbacks too: a reputation for leaking air in play, a sharp mouthpiece which can make lips uncomfortable in play, and damage to the wooden comb over time due to repeated exposure to Saliva.

Solutions to ALL THE ABOVE ISSUES are presented in this video- To address airtightness, the comb top face is sanded flat with whetstones, the slide is smoothed with a dremmel, and the underside of the mouthpiece is stone sanded flat, resulting in an airtight harp.

To address the sharpness of the mouthpiece to lips and damage the wood comb from saliva, the harp is fitted with a Kettlewell Frictionless Mouthpiece Slider, which ends the use of saliva to lubricate the harp in play, makes movement to new note hole positions easy and friction free, and provides the player with a relaxed embouchure.

With these improvements, the harp is a strong contender indeed.
