At the 'Sconset Casino

This mini-documentary about the ’Sconset Casino was produced for the 2008 exhibition ’Sconset 02564 at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. It includes excerpts from a series of oral histories by ’Sconset residents conducted in 2007 along with archival video and photos on the topic.

In this video, Linda Holland (1939–) talks about her summer job at the Casino and how both summer and year-round kids were welcome to play tennis, ping-pong, badminton, attend movies, and participate in the pet shows. Bob Longley (1932–2013) remembers helping Albert Brock run the projector. Sheila Folger Todd (1936–) remembers sneaking in the window to see a movie. Joan Pennock Craig (1920–2011) talks about the Summer Masquerade and how she and Betsy Beinecke went together as a “widow’s walk.” Joan Brown Porter (1930–) remembers the On the Isle productions with directors from New York, Broadway-style costumes, and involvement by the entire community—all were welcome to participate. Thurston Greene (1907–2009) fondly remembers the On the Isle productions as a wonderful thing to see—“warms an old man’s heart,” he said.
