C-5 Galaxy Enhanced Ability

The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation submitted an unsolicited proposal requesting new tests on the capabilities of the C-5A/B. The proposal rekindled the controversy over whether the C-5A/B or the McDonnell Douglas C-17 offered the best means for correcting airlift shortfalls, at the best price and earliest date.

The tests were completed in late 1984, and included the C-5 setting new records for airplane weight. It also included a test that showed a C-5 could back up (a feature of the C-17 that was much ballyhooed at the time).

The airplane in the video is a C-5A that had gone through the wing modification program (this is evident because the upper wing surfaces are painted in the "European 1" scheme that would be applied to the rest of the airplane during depot maintenance not long after the tests were completed.)
