Golden Hour Sunset Step by Step Acrylic Painting on Canvas for Beginners

Let's take a small break from winter and holiday paintings and paint a nice, warm, glowing sunset. I would love to be standing on that grassy path, listening to the crickets chirp and the rustling of the tree leaves as they reflect the last of the day's light brightly.

We're going to start by wetting down the back of the canvas so we can get a little extra blending time while we create our dramatic sunset sky. This will help give us an almost oil painting experience with acrylic paint. We'll then create some distant trees and shrubs, play with light and shadow in the grasses, create some lovely tree bark texture with layers of paint, and finish with a super simple way to create lots of little tree leaves in a short amount of time. We're going to learn several different acrylic painting techniques that you can then take and use in your own unique paintings. I hope you enjoy!

I’m painting on a 12x16-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.

I used:
• A 1-inch flat brush
• 5/8-in angle brush
• #8 filbert
• #6 round
• Fan brush (optional)
• Long liner
• A couple extra paper towels
• Matte Fluid Medium

I’m using Liquitex acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Titanium White
• Dioxazine Purple
• Cadmium Orange
• Cadmium Yellow Medium
• Phthalocyanine Green
