Shareholder's of security firm 'not the type you should be giving $40m to, unvetted'

Daily Telegraph’s National Political Editor John Rolfe says the shareholders of Unified Security, a firm put in charge of managing Victoria’s hotel quarantine program, were “not the type of people you should be giving more than $40 million to”.

The Andrews government hired security guards from firms like Unified Security to keep overseas travelers in quarantine.

“The majority shareholder of Unified Security, he’s one of the best-connected people in Sydney, and he earned these connections through running the security at Kings Cross nightclubs, providing the security for the Manly Sea Eagles Rugby League club.

“Whilst he might have first grade connections, it certainly hasn’t been a first-grade performance.

“The 49 per cent shareholder…tried to import bullet proof glass into Australia in the 1990’s.

“Each of them has been in charge of two failed companies and Unified itself has risen from the ashes twice.

“The first time, it sold all its physical assets back to itself for $20 thousand.

“The second time, its creditors, the taxpayers chief among them - owed $1.1 million - got less than 4 cents in the dollar.

“These are the roosters who were put in charge of the Victorian hotel quarantine.

“I’m sure that they meant well, but when you haven’t been vetted, this is the type of content that arises.”

“They’re not the type of people you should be giving more than $40 million to, virtually unchecked.”
