US lawmaker proposes bill to secure Taiwan’s energy supply

US Representative Pat Harrigan introduced the Taiwan Energy Security and Anti-Embargo Act to boost United States liquefied natural gas exports to Taiwan and protect supply routes as Middle East tensions disrupt global energy markets.

The bill would prioritize US LNG shipments to Taiwan, promote cooperation on advanced nuclear technology such as small modular reactors, and strengthen protections for Taiwan’s energy grid and storage systems against cyberattacks and sabotage.

It would also expand the authority of the United States Maritime Administration to insure ships delivering critical supplies to Taiwan if commercial insurers withdraw coverage due to military threats. Taiwan officials said short-term LNG supplies remain stable, with most shipments for March and April already secured.
