Asbestos Filter Technology #darkhistory #shorts

In 1952, as scientific evidence linking smoking to lung cancer began to surface, Kent cigarettes were launched with the promise of added safety. Manufactured by Lorillard, Kent featured the “Micronite” filter, advertised as a breakthrough that trapped harmful substances before they reached the smoker’s lungs. Between 1952 and 1956, the Micronite filter contained crocidolite asbestos, one of the most dangerous forms of asbestos known. Instead of protecting consumers, the filter released microscopic fibers that could be inhaled directly. An estimated 13 billion Kent cigarettes with asbestos filters were sold before the design was quietly discontinued, without public warning.

Decades later, smokers and factory workers exposed to these filters developed illnesses such as mesothelioma and lung cancer, leading to lawsuits and renewed scrutiny of early tobacco industry safety claims. The Kent Micronite filter remains one of the most disturbing examples of a product marketed as “healthier” while actively increasing long-term harm.
