When Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter, researchers found several unusual features in the mummy. Egyptologist Salima Ikram later argued that these were intentional, symbolic choices rather than standard burial practices. The body had been heavily coated in dark resin, the heart was missing, and certain aspects of the preservation appear to have been arranged to mirror the god Osiris, associated with regeneration and the afterlife. This may have been part of a religious effort to restore traditional beliefs after the upheaval caused by Akhenaten’s monotheistic reforms.

Some physical damage occurred during early examinations in the 1920s, when the mummy was removed and studied. These early methods were often invasive, and several parts of the body were disturbed before more modern preservation techniques were developed.
