Bonnie Pointer ~ I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) 1980 Disco Purrfection Version
Patricia Eva "Bonnie" Pointer was born July 11, 1950 and with youngest sister June created "The Pointers" in 1969. Anita joined them shortly after that and they renamed themselves The Pointer Sisters. The trio had a few singles released, but after adding oldest sister Ruth, they finally were given the chance to record their debut album and scored big with "Yes We Can Can". Their tight harmonies were dressed up with the sounds of funk, rock and roll, gospel, R&B, soul and country. As a matter of fact, they had a country crossover hit with "Fairytale" in 1974 won them their first Grammy for Best Vocal by a Duo or Group, Country. After several years of successful chart recording, Bonnie decided to go solo in 1977. She was signed to Motown Records, and then she married the man who would produce her, Jeffrey Bowen. The eponymously titled "Bonnie Pointer" saw her faithful cover of the Elgins "Heaven Must Have Sent You" but it was the fiery disco re visioning that really sent her career into the heavens. The explosive new recording lit up the dance floors all over the world with the hand claps of the gods topping off the beat heavy and country tinged hoedown string arrangement that made it an instant classic that peaked at #8 disco in mid 1979. However, it was not the first single released to clubs, that distinction belongs to "Free Me From My Freedom/Tie Me To A Tree (Handcuff Me), a double sided single that reached #26 disco in 1978. A second "Bonnie Pointer" LP was released that same year, but it took about a year for "I Can't Help Myself" to find a place on the dance floors in late 1979 and early 1980. The album version did even better than "Heaven" and got all the way to #4 disco, but only #40 on the pop charts. The Motown back catalog has been a gold mine for artists who have done covers, all the way from The Beatles to Mariah Carey, so it was was a pretty sure bet at the time that Bonnie's cover of the Four Tops 1965 #1 hit would also do well.
