The Psychology of Social Movements

This week I’m part of the #TeamTrees social movement but why does be part of something feel so good? I got that science for ya’. 🌲 Go to http://teamtrees.org to plant a tree (or 10!) and help us get to the goal of 20 million trees planted! 🌲🌳🌴🌾🍁🍃

It’s not easy to be part of a #socialmovement, but when you’re doing something together your BRAINS are literally SYNCED UP. How is it that normally introverted and/or selfish humans end up putting aside our differences and getting together? Why do we conform to groups? What causes us to stick with a group and why do we like it? Why does it feel good to be part of a movement, protest, or march? Think about Women’s Suffrage, Voting Rights, Civil Rights, Gay Rights, the Women’s March, March for Science, and March for our Lives… What keeps people sticking together? Some of it is #psychology, some is physiology, and some is just human nature… learn more in the video. OH, AND MAKE SURE YOU PLANT SOME TREES, FAM!

~~~~~ 🐣 EASTER EGGS FOR READERS 🐣 ~~~~~
P.S — As of the publishing of this video #TeamTrees is at 65,000 trees planted! I HOPE WE MAKE IT TO 20,000,000!!!!!!! 🌲🌳🌴🌾🍁🍃
P.P.S — According to studies from 2005, 2008, 2013, 2015 this social pressure comes down to the amygdala. The amygdala is an ancient part of the limbic system. It’s just a little almond-shaped set of neurons, and it lives deep in the bottom of your brain. You might know that it’s important for emotional and fear processing, but it’s also part of how we create our little groups or social “tribes.”
In social experiments where people are prompted to think about the race of participants in the group the amygdala lights up when a group of white people are shown black faces. They have an emotional reaction because they’ve been prompted to see people outside of their social group -- even if they’re not actually outside, in reality. Because when people are in mixed-race social groups, ANY outsider gets the same amygdala trigger.
Organ donors also are a good metric for in-group out-group mechanics, and prosocial peer pressure. There are a number of myths about organ donation that are all easily debunkable, and with positive peer pressure we can help people realize this.
