Golden Gate Bridge Opening: Pedestrian Day, 1937 / Original Preserved Footage
On 27th May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to the public—not to vehicles, but to people. Over 200,000 pedestrians swarmed the span between San Francisco and Marin County, making this joyful occasion one of the most memorable public celebrations in 20th-century American engineering history.
The footage in this film captures the first official crossing of the bridge by foot, a once-in-a-lifetime civic event that preceded the bridge’s full opening to motor traffic the following day. The crowds began arriving early in the morning, and by midday, the bridge was filled with walkers, joggers, cyclists, children, and costumed marchers. Many carried umbrellas, wore red-white-and-blue, or performed stunts—some even roller-skated or tap-danced the entire length of the 1.7-mile span.
Completed during the Great Depression, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, with a main span of 4,200 feet. Its construction had taken just over four years, overcoming intense financial, environmental, and engineering challenges. Designed by Joseph Strauss, with structural engineering by Charles Alton Ellis and iconic Art Deco elements from Irving Morrow, the bridge instantly became a global symbol of innovation and optimism.
This film not only celebrates a civic achievement but also captures a snapshot of 1930s American life—resilient, hopeful, and proud of its accomplishments. The Pedestrian Day remains one of San Francisco’s most beloved historical events, and the Golden Gate Bridge continues to stand as a monument to bold vision and public spirit.
