The Night We Called It A Day & There's No You - Mark Murphy

Fans of Mark Murphy know of his seemingly effortless way with the art of swing and vocal improvisation. He can jam an uptempo tune as good or better than anyone who has ever done it. His vocal range and interpretive flair are well documented on many of his recordings as well as his live performances. That he is one of jazz's great individualists is beyond dispute. No one sounds like Mark Murphy. He has achieved the most sought after and yet still the most elusive characteristic that every person who performs this music wishes for...a sound and style that is uniquely his own. On this clip Murphy sings a medley of two of jazz's most well known standards. These songs have been done by many people. Yet they have never been done by anyone else in quite this fashion. His approach to ballads is mostly grounded in plain-old straight ahead singing. Yet even within that framework Murphy brings the excitement of an improvising and experimenting tenor man. From an album full of great performances, I chose "The Night We Called It A Day/There's No You" to highlight Murphy's often overlooked way with a ballad. Had he chosen to focus on just these types of songs I believe his place in Jazz history would be no less exalted. The man can sing it all.
