Water Circulation Function of the Chilled Water Circuit and Condenser Water Circuit

1. Chilled Water Circuit

This circuit supplies chilled water to the building or AHU (Air Handling Unit).

Its main purpose is to cool the air through the cooling coil.

Main Components:

1. Evaporator

Here, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the water.

That means the water becomes cold, and the refrigerant becomes warm.

2. Chilled Water Pump

This pump circulates chilled water throughout the building or to the AHUs.

3. AHU / FCU Coil (Air Handling Unit / Fan Coil Unit)

When chilled water passes through the coil, the air gets cooled by its chill.

The cooled air is then supplied to the rooms.

4. Return Line

After giving up its cooling effect to the air, the water becomes slightly warmer and returns to the chiller's evaporator.

Circulation Process:

1. Chilled water leaves the evaporator (around 44°F / 7°C).

2. The pump sends it to the building's AHU / FCU.

3. Inside the AHU, heat exchange takes place between air and water through the cooling coil.

4. The water becomes slightly warm (around 54°F / 12°C) and returns to the evaporator inlet.

5. The refrigerant cools the water again.

This process continues continuously.

2. Condenser Water Circuit

This circuit removes heat from the chiller and releases it to the outside.

Main Components:

1. Condenser

Here, the refrigerant releases its heat to the water.

That means the refrigerant becomes cooler, and the water becomes warmer.

2. Condenser Water Pump

This pump sends the warm water to the cooling tower.

3. Cooling Tower

In the cooling tower, the heat from the water is released to the atmosphere through air contact and evaporation.

2. This water is pumped by the condenser water pump to the cooling tower.

3. In the cooling tower, the water is cooled by air contact (down to about 85°F / 29°C).
The cooled water then returns to the condenser.

Circulation Process:

1. Warm water leaves the condenser (around 95°F / 35°C).

2. This water is pumped by the condenser water pump to the cooling tower.

3. In the cooling tower, the water is cooled by air contact (down to about 85°F / 29°C).

4. The cooled water returns to the condenser inlet.

5. The condenser again absorbs heat from the refrigerant,

Its main purpose is to carry heat from the refrigerant to the cooling tower.

Main Components:

1. Condenser

Here, the refrigerant releases its heat to the water.

That means the refrigerant becomes cooler, and the

water becomes warmer.

4. The cooled water returns to the condenser inlet.

5. The condenser again absorbs heat from the refrigerant, and the cycle continues.

This circulation runs continuously.

Relation Between Both Circuits:

Chilled Water Circuit = The circuit that cools the building.

Condenser Water Circuit = The circuit that removes the heat absorbed from the building to the outside.

Both circuits together complete the entire cooling process of the chiller system.
