DIY SUGAR WAX // Only 3 Ingredients!

I don’t usually remove body hair, mostly out of laziness and pain aversion, but I heard about an all natural way to remove hair that you can make with simple ingredients at home, so I wanted to try it!

Sugaring is basically waxing, but with just three simple ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and water! You just cook the sugar mixture until it becomes caramelized, just like making candy!

It can be a little tricky to get just the right amount of caramelization, so I’ve been playing around to find the easiest way to do it. It turns out that microwaving the sugar works great and takes some of the guesswork out of the stovetop method. I also find that using cloth strips is a bit cleaner and more foolproof, although I hope to master the paste method with more practice.

To make it yourself you’ll need:
½ cup sugar - cane sugar works best, but I’ve heard you can also use brown sugar, other sweeteners don’t work as well
2 tablespoons of water
2 tablespoons of lemon juice - fresh squeezed or bottled works fine, also lime juice will work

You’ll also need:
A microwave
A microwave safe glass dish
Some drying powder like cornstarch or arrowroot powder, baby powder should work
Cloth strips, ideally cotton - I just took an old flannel pillow case and cut it into strips

All you have to do is whisk all of your ingredients together in your microwave safe dish and pop it into the microwave!

I start with 30 second increments, quickly stirring in between.
After 4 rounds of 30 seconds, the sugar should be fully dissolved.
Then I put it in the microwave for 2 rounds of 1 minute, quickly stirring in between to make sure the texture is smooth.

In total you should be microwaving your sugar for 4 minutes. Don’t allow your sugar to cool off too much between microwaving, you want it to ultimately get to about 240 degrees F so it’s important for the temperature to keep increasing without burning it.

Make sure to keep track of how many times you’ve microwaved it as you go along!

After 4 minutes you should notice a color change.
You can leave it in that container, or pour it into a container with a lid and allow it to cool for a few hours.
As the sugar mixture cools it will thicken, and once it’s cool enough to touch, you can start using it at a strip wax!
Next, spread the sugar wax in the opposite direction of hair growth, place a strip of cloth on it and smooth it out. Grab the top of the cloth and pull quickly in the direction of hair growth!

You can use each strip a few times, and once you’ve used them all up you can clean them off with hot water and use them again! I like to fill my container with the strips and water and microwave it for a few minutes to melt off all the sugar wax. Then let them dry and reuse them!

You can also try and use your wax as a paste by letting it cool a bit more. Once it’s starting to get pretty hard you can pull some out and knead it with your fingers until it gets lighter in color and less sticky. Then spread it with your fingers in the opposite direction of hair growth and quickly flick it off the opposite way! It takes some getting used to and I find that it starts to stick if you work with it too much, so I tend to stick with the cloth strips.

After you’ve waxed you’ll probably notice red bumps, don’t worry, those go away in a few hours, and you’ll be enjoying smooth hair free skin in no time!
