Starship Flight 12 (IFT-12), launched on May 22, 2026 from the new Pad 2 at Starbase, Texas, marked the debut of Starship Version 3 (Block 3) hardware with Booster 19 (Super Heavy) and Ship 39. The flight featured upgraded Raptor 3 engines and other structural improvements. Liftoff was successful with all 33 Raptor engines igniting, though one engine went out during ascent. Hot staging proceeded smoothly, but the booster encountered issues during the flip and boostback burn, preventing a full recovery attempt. Ship 39 reached partial ascent despite one RVac engine problem, successfully deployed Starlink simulator payloads (including inspector satellites), performed reentry maneuvers, and achieved a precise controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean using two engines. The approximately 1-hour-6-minute suborbital test demonstrated solid progress on Version 3 hardware, heat shield performance, and payload operations, representing another important step toward full reusability.
