Dramatic Explosion of Sodium in Water - Demonstration

Sodium metal reacts violently with water to produce hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide. It is a highly exothermic reaction. The heat generated by this reaction can lead to auto-ignition of the hydrogen
gas and also the metal itself to produce more heat. A dense fume of sodium oxide is evolved. Due to its low melting point, solid sodium gradually melts. The increased surface area of molten sodium, speeds up the reaction, which ultimately turns into explosion. This demonstration can become very dangerous if too large a piece of sodium is used. It is a Redox reaction. The electron transition from sodium atom to water molecule is represented by animation, that is shown in the last part of this video. The author gratefully acknowledge the You Tube Audio Library for providing background music( Real World - Silent Partner).
Disclaimer : Extreme precaution should be taken to do this demonstration."Don't do demos unless you are an experienced chemist !"
