When Science Meets Data: Three Stories from the Field,Speaker: Neel Sundaresan, eBAY, 20130325
Data has become a key adjective for Science today. Availability of new kinds of data at scale has influenced not only how algorithms are implemented or systems are built but even how science is done. In this talk I will talk about experiences from three different areas where big data has made science possible in ways not possible before. The three cases are from Search, Computer Vision, and Economics. In Search I discuss how we address the problem of search recall for rare queries at internet scale. In Computer Vision I will talk about how creative and systematic understanding of large scale image data is used to build scalable vision-based commerce applications. In Economics we show how presence of a large scale user base in a vibrant marketplace creates opportunities for studying naturally occurring experiments which can be used to get a better economic understanding of marketplace polices and design decisions.
Speaker Bio
Neel has been with eBay since 2005 and has been managed the research team for the past 7 years during which tenure he created research departments in big data science, economics, computer vision, human language technologies, human computer interaction, among others. He drives a platform based approach to research and has led research in diverse areas from search and recommender systems, trust and reputation systems, social networks, and large scale data analysis systems. Prior to joining eBay he cofounded a network CRM company and prior to that he headed the eMerging Internet Technologies research group at the IBM Almaden Research Center where he led projects on Internet Search and Web mining, XML tools and technologies, web accessibility and, multi-modal interfaces. He has over 60 research publications, over 80 issued patents and several patents pending. He is a frequent invited speaker at several national and international technical conferences. His wrote his PhD dissertation on the topic of Modeling Control and Dynamic Data Parallelism in Object Oriented Languages at the Computer Science department of Indiana University, Bloomington. More recently, Neel founded the Inspire! Program (http://inspire.ebay.com) with the purpose of providing educational and career opportunities in STEM for top performing students of disadvantaged background through access, mentorship, scholarship, and internships.
