Episode 4 - Iconography
From an early age, Robert has been fascinated with what happens to ordinary human beings when they allow themselves to be touched by God. For him, iconography is a privileged way to depict this. The art of iconography goes back almost sixteen centuries, forming part of the tradition that continues to nourish Christianity. Though he has a reputation for being a rebel, Robert paints icons only of those people whose lives manifest basic Gospel values in exemplary ways, especially self-sacrificing love—in other words, those who are “holy,” which is the original meaning of the word “saint.” A halo of light around the head of a person in an icon depicts holiness –depicts someone who has been touched by God and changed. If a person is holy, they are filled with God’s light.
