Rockland Switchboard & Telephone History Center - Whitman Operator!
This is one of the most comical of the videos that we shot during the Rockland Telephone History Center Open House on June, 23rd, 2018. The Whitman Operator is one of local Abington GAR Ladies, Debra DiFranco. She has a great sense of humor and it was very entertaining watching her create her own history here at our museum!
At the museum, we encourage people not only to pick up any phone in our exhibit, and talk on it, but also to try their hand at being an operator. For many, particularly younger folks, it is the first time they have ever seen one or these live, and the first time they have ever operated one of these switchboards. For some, like Debra, who used to be telephone operators in their past, it brings back a LOT of memories.
We are always looking for people interested in being an operator during our museum open house days that we host every couple of months. Yes, YOU could be an operator!
To Debra's left is Stan St. Onge, who is not only trying to give her verbal assistance, but is also adding humorous commentary (including noting that not only is someone waiting to be connected to Whitman 430, but at the same time, it is 4:30pm!)
Next to her is the Rockland, MA Telephone Operators, and at the end is the Brockton, MA Telephone Operators.
At the museum, we always have a GREAT TIME. Lots of fun. Open to all ages, and a great educational experience for everyone!
