20 years of scrap: The waste left behind by US troops in Afghanistan
After two decades, the last US troops in Afghanistan are set to leave the country by September 11 this year. But as they depart, they are also leaving behind tonnes of destroyed equipment, ranging from computer keyboards to boots. At the vast Bagram air base, this has sparked a boom in business for scrap merchants looking to sell on anything valuable. But it has also left many angry that the equipment was not put to better use in a country still reeling from years of warfare.
