Melissa Brown at DEREK ELLER Rico Gatson at MILES McENERY

James Kalm is slipping and sliding through the New York art scene, fearing that he may be forced back into “lock-down” due to a feared post Thanksgiving infection spike. Nonetheless, your correspondent makes it to a couple of shows and is able to buttonhole two artists for a bit of painterly banter.
Melissa Brown’s “New York, New York 2020” features a series of mixed media paintings that employ several technical approaches which seem intended to reduce the fetishistic notion of the “brushstroke”. Using photo silkscreen, masking tape, airbrush, and stencils, Brown creates close-up images of hands, cellphones and steering wheels some backed by views of East River bridges.
Rico Gatson presents paintings on panels using a pallet of basic colors and geometric shapes. Though formalistically simple, these works are more complex than first appearance might imply, and ring with the same elegance as a Bach fugue, or a short jazz riff from Miles Davis.
A bonus round run-through of small paintings by Steve DiBenedetto is interspersed. A musical introduction is provided by Jill Fiore @soundandfiore
