Taj Mahal: The Great Indian Jewel [IGEO TV]

The Taj Mahal is a complex building built between 1631 and 1654 in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, in India, on the banks of the Yamuna river, by Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan of Mughal dynasty.

The impressive architectural ensemble was erected in honor of his favorite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child. It is estimated that its construction required the effort of about 20,000 workers.

The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Islamic, Persian, Indian and even Turkish architecture. The monument has achieved special notoriety for the romantic character of its inspiration. Although the mausoleum covered with white marble dome is the most famous, Taj Mahal is an integrated architectural ensemble.

Now it's a major tourist destination of India. In 1983, he was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Taj Mahal was named one of The New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
